Prague

With just a few days left before Brittany headed back to the States, Ben and I snuck off to Prague for a grown-up-only weekend.

We arrived early Friday evening and were able to check out Old Town Square before having a traditional Czech dinner--pork knee anyone?! Then, inspired by the free-spirited backpackers doing shots around the square on a bicycle made for eight, we went out on the town. We sampled the dark beer and accepted "traditional" shots (suckers) at U Fleku--an old beer hall, played a few hands at a random casino, and had pilsners by the Opera House.

Before touring the city on Saturday, we fueled up at Bohemian Bagel—a popular stop on the backpacker trail, and a big hit for us since we can’t get decent bagels in Basel. We then walked the city, checking out Letenske Park, Prague Castle and the Little Quarter along the way. The city is gorgeous. At first it felt like Basel to me, with its winding river and bridges, but Prague is much bigger and grander and has a definite Eastern European flair. We especially liked the Little Quarter with its smaller alleys, outdoor restaurants and local craftsmen.

Saturday night we celebrated my birthday with dinner at Mlynec, a great Czech & Asian Fusion restaurant by the Charles Bridge. We sat outside and enjoyed a six-course menu of chef selections and wine pairings. It was a beautiful setting and the food was delicious--well done Ben!

After more bagels on Sunday morning and a quick shopping trip for kiddie souvenirs, we headed back to Basel. The boys were excited to see us and presented Mommy with homemade cupcakes, cards and a great Happy Birthday duet on their toy microphone; it was a fabulous 32nd birthday!!
